The Civil Aviation Authority administered and operated the new Gwadar International Airport. The airport, jointly owned by Pakistan, Oman, and China, would handle domestic and international operations.

The airport is being developed as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a pillar of China’s One Belt, One Road (OBOR) plan.

When completed in 2022, it will be Pakistan’s largest airport and second capable of receiving A380 aircraft. It was anticipated to increase development on the Gwadar peninsula and bilateral trade between Pakistan and China.

The airport would operate under an open sky policy and would be created with the assistance of the Civil Aviation Authority.

The new Gwadar International Airport project was launched in 2014 as a CPEC early harvest high-priority project. It was approved in January 2015 by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec).

The project is being supported through a grant agreement signed in May 2017 between China and Pakistan. The project’s soil testing began in January 2018 and included drilling 300 boreholes in various places.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place in March 2019, with completion anticipated for 2022.
