CDA Starts Shahdara, Chiniot Dam Projects to Resolve Water Crisis

Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to build two tiny dams, Shahdara and Chiniot, to help alleviate the city’s water crisis.

Details indicate an additional 8 million gallons per day (mgd) of water will be supplied to Islamabad from Simly Dam starting Thursday.

Islamabad needs 120 mgd of water out of a total requirement of about 250 mgd. The CDA receives roughly 70 mgd from tubewells, Khanpur Dam, and Simly Dam.

To permanently address the water problem, CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa has ordered quick activity on the Shahdara, Tarbela, Chiniot, and Khanpur dams. The Shahdara Dam will be on the Shahdara stream, while the Chiniot Dam will be in the Simly Dam catchment region.

The CDA also intends to begin construction on the Ghazi Brotha project and the Khanpur Dam. The CDA Chairman voiced his dissatisfaction and gave the order to present a plan to WAPDA and other institutions to remedy the theft.
