WAPDA chairman visits the project of Mohmand Dam

LAHORE: Engineer Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd), the chairman of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), visited the Mohmand Dam Project site. The project is located in the Mohmand District of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, across the River Swat. He visited a number of the project’s construction locations and paid close attention to the spillway and river diversion tunnels. Concurrent excavation, stabilization, and concrete work are now being done at these sites.

During the visit, Ghani presided over a progress review meeting that was attended by the Mohmand Dam Project’s general manager/project director, senior project members, and representatives from consulting and contracting businesses. The project colony, permanent access roads inside the project area, concreting, excavation of spillways, and river diversion tunnels were all discussed during the conference. The construction of quarries, the design of coffer dams, and the schedule for river diversion were also topics of discussion.

The fact that concentrated efforts are being made to finish the diversion system within the given deadlines was underlined. The WAPDA chairman emphasised once more how crucial it is to make sure the River Swat is diverted during the present low-flow season. He gave the contractor instructions to provide more resources in order to speed up this important procedure.

One of WAPDA’s eight megaprojects, the Mohmand Dam, is expected to add 10,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity and roughly 10 million acre-feet (MAF) of water storage in phases between 2024 and 2028–9. When the dam is finished in 2026, it will have the capacity to hold 1.29 million acre-feet of water, support irrigation on 18,233 acres of newly acquired land, augment irrigation supplies on 160,000 acres of already-owned land, and supply 300 million gallons of potable water per day to Peshawar. Additionally, the facility will be able to generate 800 MW of electricity.
