Govt pondering PM’s promised G-5 varsity. The govt is considering establishing the promised varsity for the Prime Minister in the G-5. According to sources, a meeting was held a few days ago between officials from the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the Capital Development Authority (CDA), and the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration to discuss the feasibility of establishing the university in the Sir Syed Memorial Society (SSMS) Complex in G-5 along Ataturk Avenue.

HEC is tasked with establishing the projected Pakistan University of Engineering and Emerging Technologies (PUEET). After inspecting the structure, the officials determined that it was suitable for the initiation of academic activity.

According to sources, HEC had also submitted two letters to the CDA requesting permission to lease the facility, and deputy director planning and development Asim Khanzada met with CDA member estate Naveed Elahi in this respect.

The university will be temporarily located in the Sir Syed Memorial Society building; officials will tour the complex and determine whether it is suitable for establishing the Pakistan University of Engineering and Emerging Technologies.

The meeting was informed that the building’s lease had ended and that the CDA should turn it over to the HEC for the interim establishment of PUEET.

According to sources, officials from the HEC and CDA and ICT director Waqas Anwar and development and finance director Ali Asghar visited the complex and deemed it adequate to build the varsity.

According to HEC papers, the building is currently occupied by the Department of Archaeology and Museum, the National History and Literary Division, and the Sir Syed Memorial Society’s secretariat. From 2003 to 2018, the building was used by a private institution.

“They discovered the facility to be purpose-built for the interim establishment of a university. It is equipped with the following features: The total size is approximately 11,666 square yards (2.5 acres), with a covered area of 100,000 square feet,” according to the paperwork.

The structure features two open halls, a fully equipped theatre with 850 seats, a 20,000-square-foot service space.

Ayesha Ikram, the HEC’s spokesperson, could not be reached for comment; nevertheless, a senior commission official confirmed that personnel had visited the complex, adding that the HEC had communicated its findings to the federal govt.

The Aligarh Old Boys’ Association established the Sir Syed Memorial Society in 1984 as a homage to Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. In addition, the CDA has set up 24 kanals along Ataturk Avenue in G-5 to construct an auditorium, library, reading rooms, and museum.

The LHC has requested that the Punjab government submit a master plan for the riverfront project. On Friday, the Lahore High Court instructed the Punjab government to produce the Ravi Riverfront Urban Development Project’s master plan (RRUDP).

The judge commented that if the project had a master plan, the provincial government’s or the Ravi Urban Development Authority’s (Ruda’s) lawyers would have submitted it along with their written declarations.

Ruda’s Reply: Ruda responded through its attorney Shazib Masud, asserting that the property acquisition falls squarely within the scope of public uses.

According to the authority, it was established to develop housing policies and programs, including but not limited to traffic, transportation, health, education, water supply, sewerage, and solid waste disposal.

It dispels petitioners’ concerns that the authority’s projects will be environmentally harmful.

The Sindh government would make an upfront payment of Rs6 billion following the apex court’s instructions.

The Sindh chief minister had directed that the project’s fencing wall be constructed by Pakistan Railways for Rs1.3 billion.

The ECNEC also approved a recommendation by the Planning Commission that the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) be authorized to consider projects that the executive committee had agreed with the goal of cost rationalization.

If the rationalization exercise results in a cost reduction, the CDWP will approve such projects. They submit the status report to the ECNEC chairman for review.

If the project’s cost is revised upward, it will be resubmitted for approval to ECNEC. The CDWP is authorized to approve projects up to a value of Rs10 billion.

The minister is seeking bids to revive Islamabad’s ‘forgotten’ college. On Thursday, the government said that the ‘forgotten’ public college in Islamabad, which has been closed for more than 32 years, would reopen as soon as feasible.

Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood urged ministry officials and the director-general of the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) to finalize credible alternatives within a week during a meeting convened to discuss the problem.

The minister presided over a meeting to examine the Mera Bagwal Technical College’s single-point agenda and asked ministry employees and the FDE director-general to finalize ideas for the type of education delivered at the college.

Local MNAs Raja Khurram Shahzad Nawaz, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on CDA Affairs Ali Nawaz Awan, and Parliamentary Secretary Education Wajiha Qamar also attended the meeting.

Following the discussion, the minister told Dawn: “We have resolved to make this college operational as soon as feasible.” Today, we explored numerous choices, including whether to establish a degree college or a university. Finally, I commanded that viable ideas be finalized.”

According to the college’s website, it will open soon.

The minister stated unequivocally that he will use the facility for educational purposes and that his ministry has been aggressively pushing the case. The letter, dated Sept. 9, and obtained by Dawn, stated: “Your attention is invited to the rehabilitation of the Mera Begwal building, which was constructed to provide technical education to the community, but the facility has remained abandoned, and the people’s aspirations have been dashed.” The government said that the ‘forgotten’ public college in Islamabad, which has been closed for more than 32 years, would reopen as soon as feasible.

The statement conducted a meeting on August 31 to discuss the matter at the community’s request. The meeting resolved to open the building as a degree and technical college for males. The FDE would be responsible for providing instructional and support staff, equipment, and minor building repairs and maintenance.

“Because the community gave 232 kanals of land, would use the additional property to provide health services to the community. The government said that the ‘forgotten’ public college in Islamabad, which has been closed for more than 32 years, would reopen as soon as feasible.

According to the letter, regular classes at the college will begin in March and August 2022.
