90-year-old Sukkur Barrage being restored and modernized

The 90-year-old Sukkur Barrage is being fixed up and made more modern by the Sindh Irrigation Department and the World Bank, according to news from October 6. The project, which is being paid for by the WB, is expected to cost PKR 34 billion to finish.

Details show that the project was started at a ceremony at the barrage by WB Task Team Leader Francois Onimus and Sindh Barrages Improvement Project (SBIP) Project Director Ghulam Mohiuddin Mughal. When he spoke at the event, Mr. Onimus said that after the Sukkur Barrage was fixed up and made more modern, the oldest barrage in the country would be able to handle an unusual rise in water flow during flood season in the years to come.

The news sources said that Mr. Onimus said that all 66 gates of the barrage will be replaced within the four-year time frame, along with the barrage’s civil and mechanical parts. SPIP Project Director Mighal says that the Sukkur Barrage has reached the end of its useful life. However, this project will fix the problems with the off-taking canals and main structure.

A member of SBIP’s technical team said that replacing the gates and the system that raises and lowers them will add 50 years to the life of the barrage. The new gates will make sure that there is a steady supply of water and stop silt from getting in the way. News sources say that the department in charge is thinking about making a new feasibility study to find a good place to build a new Sukkur barrage.

LDA will auction commercial and residential land to generate revenue

News sources said on October 3 that the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) will sell its commercial and residential plots in different societies to raise money for development projects.

Tomorrow, October 5, the auction will be held at the LDA Community Center in New Garden Town. Sources say that the LDA wants to sell the plots it owns in Model Town Extension, Tajpura, Johar Town, Sabzazar, and Jubilee Town. All plots will be sold at a public auction run by the LDA auction committee, so that everyone can see what’s going on. The authority will also put the right to rent the Marquee at the Finance and Trade Center in Johar Town up for auction.

The CDA will repair the road between Rawal Chowk and Taramri Chowk

On September 2, news sources said that the Capital Development Authority (CDA) will fix up and widen Park Road from Rawal Chowk to Taramri Chowk.

The road will be 7.9 kilometers long and cost PKR 1.95 billion. Work on it will start in the third week of October. Captain (ret.) Usman Younis, who is in charge of the CDA, shared the news on his official Twitter account. He said that the project would take four months to finish and that it would make getting to and from Rawal Chowk and Taramri Chowk much easier.

He also said that the 7th Avenue project is now open to all kinds of traffic because the CDA has made it work. LDA proposes three Babu Sabu-Band Road restoration designs

On October 3, news sources said that the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has come up with three designs for fixing up the area from Babu Sabu Interchange to Band Road.

Under the project “Rehabilitation of Band Road from Babu Sabu Interchange to Ring Road and Improvement at Gulshan-i-Ravi T-Junction,” the development authority came up with the idea. Under the project, the authority will build a carriageway with multiple lanes and flyovers to connect the city’s two busiest points of entry and exit.

Design 1:

  • From Babu Sabu Interchange to Ring Road, there will be a six-lane, two-way road.
  • The traffic will use a three-lane underpass with a height clearance of 5.1 metres (bound for Babu Sabu Interchange)
  • PKR The 10.5-kanal plot of land needed for the project will cost $4,959,000,000 to buy.

Design 2:

  • From the Babu Sabu Interchange to the Ring Road, there will be a six-lane road with two protected U-turns.
  • The project would cost PKR 4.104 billion. More than PKR 2.079 billion would go toward building it, and the rest would go toward buying the 40-kanal plot of land.
  • The project will create a protected U-turn lane on Band Road between Babu Sabu Interchange and a stretch of road without traffic lights.

Design 3:

  • From Babu Sabu to Band Road, there is a six-lane road with flyovers.
  • For traffic going to the Babu Sabu Interchange, there will be a three-lane flyover.
  • In this way, the LDA Executive Board will decide for sure on the project at their next meeting. The Planning and Development (P&D) Board will also have something to say about this.

According to the LDA, steps have been taken to get rid of traffic jams and lower carbon emissions by making traffic flow smoothly and without signals.
